IHG Hotels & Resorts has achieved a major milestone in its India growth strategy with the opening of Crowne Plaza Lucknow, marking its 50th operational hotel in the country. This development underscores the hospitality giant’s commitment to expanding its footprint across India by balancing its mainstream offerings with a growing portfolio of premium and luxury brands. As part of its long-term vision, IHG has outlined plans to open nearly 70 additional hotels across the country within the next two to three years, reinforcing India’s strategic importance in its Middle East, Africa, and Southwest Asia expansion blueprint.

Crowne Plaza Lucknow Strengthens Premium Portfolio

The unveiling of the 110-room Crowne Plaza in Lucknow marks a key development in IHG’s premium segment strategy. The property blends modern amenities with business-centric hospitality, aimed at both corporate travelers and leisure guests in one of North India’s emerging commercial hubs.

The move signals IHG’s intention to not only maintain but amplify its presence in India’s tier-2 cities, leveraging demand from growing business centers outside the traditional metropolitan areas.

IHG’s Growth Trajectory in India

With the latest opening, IHG now operates 50 hotels under five distinct brands across India. These include mainstream powerhouses such as Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and the newly introduced Garner, as well as luxury and premium labels like InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, and Six Senses.

The company’s Managing Director for the Middle East, Africa, and Southwest Asia, Haitham Mattar, noted that while the mainstream segment continues to drive volume, the expansion of the premium and luxury offerings plays a vital role in shaping brand perception and market positioning.

"This is a significant milestone that reflects our deep commitment to the country," Mattar said in an official statement. "We are strengthening our premium and luxury portfolio with our iconic and well-established brands."

Robust Pipeline for Future Expansion

IHG’s aggressive development strategy is further reflected in its robust pipeline of nearly 70 hotels slated to launch in India over the next two to three years. These upcoming properties will span a range of formats—from business-friendly accommodations to upscale resorts—tailored to meet the evolving needs of India’s increasingly diverse travel and hospitality market.

This expansion is aligned with IHG’s broader regional ambition to cement its role as a hospitality leader across South Asia and the broader MEA (Middle East and Africa) region.

India: A Strategic Growth Market

The growing footprint of IHG Hotels & Resorts in India is a testament to the country’s dynamic hospitality landscape. With a booming middle class, increasing domestic travel, and rising demand for branded accommodations in secondary and tertiary cities, India remains one of the most promising growth markets in the global hospitality sector.

IHG’s continued investment reinforces its confidence in the long-term potential of the Indian economy, particularly as business travel, tourism, and infrastructure development continue to recover and expand post-pandemic.

Conclusion

The opening of Crowne Plaza Lucknow as IHG’s 50th property in India is more than a milestone—it is a signal of strategic intent. By balancing volume through its mainstream brands with high-margin offerings in the premium and luxury space, IHG is setting the stage for sustained growth in one of the world’s most dynamic hospitality markets. With nearly 70 hotels in the pipeline, the company’s commitment to India is as ambitious as it is well-calculated.
