Mystery Surrounds Honeymoon Murder in Meghalaya as Family Questions Motive Behind Killing

By Keshav Kulshrestha , 23 June 2025

The tragic murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya last month continues to puzzle both his family and authorities. The victim's family has expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding the motive behind his death, with allegations that police are not uncovering key details. The accused, Raja's wife Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, are under investigation for orchestrating the murder with the help of accomplices. Despite the police's ongoing inquiries, the family is calling for a narco-analysis test to uncover the truth and answer the lingering questions about the crime.

The Murder and Its Aftermath

In a chilling twist, Raja Raghuvanshi’s honeymoon in Meghalaya turned into a nightmare when he was murdered in what appears to be a carefully planned scheme orchestrated by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha. The couple, newly married, had travelled to the picturesque state, but their romantic getaway ended with a tragedy that has since captivated public attention.

Sonam and Raj, together with a group of accomplices, are accused of hiring individuals to execute the murder. However, despite the gravity of the crime, the investigation remains clouded in confusion, particularly regarding the motive. Raja's family has expressed strong concerns about the pace of the investigation and the lack of clear answers.

Family’s Frustration Over Investigation

Raja’s brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, has been vocal in his frustration with the investigation, questioning why the authorities have not been able to establish a concrete motive behind his brother’s murder. He highlighted a puzzling inconsistency in the actions of Raj Kushwaha, who, if his intentions were to elope with Sonam, could have done so without resorting to violence. Instead, Raj chose to murder Raja during what should have been a celebration of love.

“The Meghalaya Police couldn't even extend their remand for eight days. Raj is yet to reveal why he committed the murder. If Raj wanted, he could have run away with Sonam earlier. Why did they have to murder Raja? Are they such big gangsters that the police are scared of them?” Sachin questioned, further expressing confusion over the lack of progress in solving the case.

Calls for Narco-Test to Unveil the Truth

In an attempt to get to the bottom of the case, the family has called for a narco-analysis test, which they believe might help uncover the truth about the motive behind the murder. "I have become a beggar asking for a narco-test. If a narco-test doesn't happen, I will go to the High Court and Supreme Court if I have to... We still don't understand why they murdered my brother," said Sachin, his voice filled with a mixture of grief and disbelief.

The narco-analysis test, which is often used in criminal investigations to extract vital information from suspects, could be a pivotal tool in solving this case. However, as of now, there has been no indication that the police will approve such a test.

Judicial Custody and Police Involvement

Meanwhile, the investigation continues as Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Kushwaha have been sent to judicial custody. On Saturday, a district and sessions court in Shillong remanded the two accused to 13 days of judicial custody. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that both Sonam and Raj have been placed in judicial custody, with no requests made for further police remand.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Tushar Chanda clarified that the police did not request further custody for the accused, as the Investigating Officer had deemed judicial custody to be more appropriate at this stage of the investigation.

The remaining accused, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand, were also sent to 14-day judicial custody earlier this week, adding to the complexity of the case. With all the suspects now in custody, the investigation will need to focus on uncovering the details of how the murder was planned and executed.

Public and Legal Scrutiny

The case has drawn considerable attention both locally and nationally, with legal experts weighing in on the need for thorough and swift justice. There is mounting pressure on the Meghalaya Police to expedite their investigation and provide clear answers to both the victim's family and the public.

Legal experts suggest that the case could raise important questions about the effectiveness of police investigations in high-profile murder cases, especially when the motive remains unclear. Moreover, the family's request for a narco-test could potentially set a legal precedent for similar cases in the future.

Conclusion: The Quest for Justice Continues

As the investigation progresses, the Raghuvanshi family is holding on to hope that the truth will eventually come to light. The lingering questions surrounding the motive for Raja's murder have not only cast a shadow over the investigation but have also led to a wider debate about the transparency of law enforcement in handling sensitive cases.

In the days ahead, it remains to be seen whether the Meghalaya Police will be able to crack the case and provide the answers the family desperately seeks, or if the quest for justice will take longer than expected, potentially involving further legal battles.
