Viral Video of Namaz at Bengaluru Airport Sparks Political Controversy in Karnataka

By Nishant Verma , 11 November 2025

A video showing a group of passengers offering namaz inside the Bengaluru airport terminal has gone viral, triggering a heated political exchange in Karnataka. The footage, filmed by a bystander, quickly gained traction on social media as opposition leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) questioned the Congress government’s stance on public religious practices in state-managed facilities. Airport authorities clarified that the act was spontaneous and peaceful, emphasizing that no rules were violated. However, the incident has reignited debates around secularism, freedom of religion, and the management of public spaces in India’s bustling aviation hubs.

The Viral Moment and Its Context

The video, recorded at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), shows several individuals performing namaz in a quiet corner of the terminal, reportedly while waiting for their flight. Within hours of its upload, the footage spread widely across social media platforms, amassing thousands of views and sparking polarized commentary.

Witnesses described the scene as calm, with no disruption to passenger movement or airport operations. However, critics raised concerns about whether such practices should be permitted within the airport’s common areas, citing potential security and administrative implications.

Airport officials stated that the prayer was neither preplanned nor part of any organized event, clarifying that the passengers involved did not obstruct any public pathways or compromise safety. Authorities have so far refrained from taking disciplinary action, citing the absence of any violation under aviation or public conduct norms.

Political Reactions: BJP Targets Congress Government

The incident quickly escalated into a political flashpoint. Senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the state government for what they described as selective leniency, alleging that such public religious expressions could lead to communal friction if left unchecked.

BJP spokespersons demanded clarity from the Karnataka government and the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on their policies regarding religious activities within airport premises. Some party members questioned whether similar gestures from other faiths would be tolerated with equal leniency, accusing the ruling Congress of promoting “appeasement politics.”

In response, Congress leaders dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, emphasizing that India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and peaceful expression, provided such acts do not disrupt public order. They reiterated that the airport is an international transit space accommodating passengers of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
