Lakshmi Mittal Leaves UK Amid Wealth-Tax Shakeup, Chooses Dubai and Switzerland

Steel magnate Lakshmi N. Mittal, one of Britain’s richest individuals, is reportedly relinquishing his UK tax residency as new wealth taxes loom under the Labour government. The 75-year-old, now a tax resident of Switzerland, plans to spend more time in Dubai, where he already owns property. Tax advisers suggest that inheritance tax—not income or capital gains—is his primary concern, as his global assets could be subject to the UK’s 40 per cent death duties. His departure underscores a broader trend of ultra-high-net-worth individuals exiting the UK amid uncertain fiscal policy.

Indian Funds in Swiss Banks Triple in 2024, Raising Questions—and Clarifications—on Financial Transparency

Indian funds held in Swiss banks surged to 3.5 billion Swiss francs (approximately Rs. 37,600 crore) in 2024, marking a threefold increase over the previous year. This dramatic rise, driven largely by interbank and institutional holdings, follows a significant drop in 2023 and rekindles public interest in the long-debated issue of alleged black money. However, official data from the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) indicate that this surge is not reflective of personal undisclosed wealth.
