Star Air Expands Regional Network with New Bengaluru–Vijaynagar Route

By Keshav Kulshrestha , 4 November 2025

In a strategic move to enhance regional air connectivity, Star Air has launched direct flight services between Bengaluru and Vijaynagar (Toranagallu) under the government’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme. The new route aims to bolster economic and tourism links in Karnataka, offering improved accessibility to the historically significant Vijayanagar region. Operated by Embraer jets, the service will strengthen Star Air’s growing southern network while supporting the Centre’s mission to make affordable air travel accessible to Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The airline’s expansion highlights rising demand for regional air travel and India’s accelerating focus on aviation-led infrastructure growth.

Strengthening Regional Air Connectivity

Star Air, a prominent regional carrier under the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, has officially commenced flight operations between Bengaluru and Vijaynagar, marking another milestone in its efforts to expand intra-state connectivity. The service, inaugurated under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) initiative, is designed to make air travel accessible and affordable for smaller cities and emerging business hubs.

The route connects Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, with Jindal Vijaynagar Airport in Toranagallu, located near the heritage city of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The new link is expected to enhance both tourism and industrial access, benefiting travelers, entrepreneurs, and logistics operators across Karnataka’s growing economic corridor.

Boost to Tourism and Economic Growth

The Bengaluru–Vijaynagar route holds strategic significance beyond convenience—it bridges Karnataka’s IT capital with a region known for rich cultural heritage and industrial activity. Toranagallu, home to JSW Steel and several ancillary industries, has been steadily evolving into a major economic zone.

Tourism is expected to gain a strong push from the new service, as the area encompasses the ancient ruins of Hampi, one of India’s most visited archaeological destinations. The direct flight reduces travel time drastically compared to road or rail, making weekend and business travel more efficient.

Industry observers note that improved air access could lead to a surge in tourism revenues, business collaborations, and local employment opportunities in the region.

Fleet and Operational Details

Star Air will deploy its modern Embraer ERJ-145 jets, known for their efficiency and comfort in short-haul operations, on the Bengaluru–Vijaynagar route. These 50-seater aircraft are particularly suited for regional airports with smaller runways, ensuring safe and seamless connectivity to underserved destinations.

The flight schedule is designed to accommodate both business and leisure travelers, offering convenient timings for same-day return trips. Competitive ticket pricing, coupled with the UDAN subsidy framework, makes the service accessible to a wide spectrum of passengers.

With this addition, Star Air further strengthens its position as one of India’s leading regional carriers, currently operating routes across southern and western states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Aligning with India’s Aviation Growth Vision

The launch of the Bengaluru–Vijaynagar route aligns with India’s broader National Civil Aviation Policy, which emphasizes inclusive growth and connectivity to smaller cities. The UDAN scheme, introduced in 2016, has become a cornerstone of this effort, enabling regional airlines like Star Air to expand into previously underserved markets.

By bridging major metros with cultural and industrial hubs, the initiative supports balanced regional development, enhances mobility for rural populations, and encourages investment in regional airports.

A spokesperson from Star Air stated that the airline remains committed to “democratizing air travel by linking smaller towns to economic centers,” underscoring its long-term vision of expanding connectivity across India’s tier-II and tier-III regions.

Outlook: A Step Toward Inclusive Aviation

The introduction of direct flights between Bengaluru and Vijaynagar reflects a larger trend in India’s aviation landscape—the rise of regional air mobility. As passenger traffic in smaller cities surges, regional airlines like Star Air are seizing the opportunity to fill critical connectivity gaps.

With infrastructure improvements, digital booking access, and policy support, India’s domestic aviation market is on course to become the world’s third largest by 2030. Star Air’s latest expansion not only strengthens its network presence but also contributes meaningfully to the government’s goal of ensuring that “every Indian can fly.”
