The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has issued an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) inviting Indian researchers to analyze archival data from past Venus missions. This initiative aims to enhance scientific understanding and support the upcoming Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM), also known as Shukrayaan, scheduled for launch on March 29, 2028. The AO focuses on various aspects of Venusian studies, including morphology, surface composition, atmospheric dynamics, and ionospheric interactions, to build a robust scientific foundation for the mission.

Objectives of the Announcement of Opportunity

ISRO's AO seeks to promote, strengthen, and expand the scientific community engaged in Venus research. By encouraging the analysis and modeling of existing Venusian data, ISRO aims to:

Enhance Scientific Understanding: Facilitate in-depth studies of Venus's geological and atmospheric properties.

Support Mission Planning: Provide critical insights to inform the design and objectives of the VOM.

Foster Collaboration: Engage Indian scientific institutions in planetary exploration efforts.

Key Research Areas

The AO outlines several thematic areas for research proposals:

Venusian Morphology and Topography: Investigating surface features and geological structures.

Surface Composition and Mineralogy: Analyzing the planet's crust and mineral resources.

Atmospheric Structure and Dynamics: Studying the composition and behavior of Venus's atmosphere.

Ionospheric Interactions: Examining the effects of solar wind on Venus's ionosphere.

Modeling Venusian Environments: Developing simulations to understand atmospheric and ionospheric processes.

These areas align with the scientific objectives of the VOM, aiming to provide comprehensive insights into Venus's characteristics and evolution.

Significance for India's Space Program

The VOM represents a significant step in India's planetary exploration endeavors. By leveraging archival data, ISRO aims to:

Advance Scientific Knowledge: Contribute to global understanding of Venus and its similarities to Earth.

Enhance Technological Capabilities: Develop and demonstrate advanced space exploration technologies.

Strengthen International Collaboration: Position India as a key player in global space research initiatives.

Conclusion

ISRO's call for research proposals underscores its commitment to advancing planetary science and exploration. By involving the Indian scientific community in the study of Venus, ISRO aims to ensure that the VOM is grounded in comprehensive, data-driven insights, paving the way for a successful mission and contributing to humanity's broader understanding of our solar system.
