India’s 5G Surge: Subscriber Base Set to Triple by 2030, Redefining Mobile Connectivity

India’s 5G revolution is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, with the subscriber base projected to grow over threefold to approximately 980 million by 2030, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report. As 5G adoption rises, 4G usage is expected to decline by nearly 60%, dropping to 230 million users. The report underscores India’s leadership in global mobile data consumption, with average smartphone data usage currently at 32 GB per month—the highest worldwide. With this figure projected to double by 2030, the demand for a robust 5G infrastructure has never been greater. Rapid mid-band spectrum rollout and rural 5G FWA deployment are key growth drivers.

India’s 5G Growth Outpaces Global Benchmarks

India’s telecommunications landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by the exponential adoption of 5G technology. According to the updated Ericsson Mobility Report, released on Tuesday, the country’s 5G subscriber base stood at 290 million as of the end of 2024, comprising nearly 24% of all mobile connections. By 2030, that figure is expected to surge to 980 million subscribers, making up 75% of India’s total mobile user base.

This marks a more than threefold increase over the next six years, driven by widespread availability of 5G-enabled smartphones, expansive mid-band spectrum coverage, and aggressive infrastructure rollouts by telecom operators.

4G Decline Inevitable Amid 5G Momentum

As 5G proliferates across India, the number of 4G users is set to shrink significantly. The report forecasts a drop in 4G subscriptions to 230 million by 2030—a 60% reduction from current levels. The declining relevance of 4G indicates a strategic pivot in the telecom sector toward next-generation network investments, aiming to meet consumer expectations for faster, more reliable mobile experiences.

The updated projections slightly revise Ericsson’s November 2024 estimates, which had earlier pegged 5G users at 970 million and 4G subscribers at 240 million by the decade’s end.

India Leads in Global Data Consumption

India remains the undisputed global leader in mobile data usage. As of 2024, average monthly data consumption per smartphone user in India reached 32 GB, the highest in the world. While Ericsson previously estimated that this would grow to 66 GB per user by 2030, the current forecast has been modestly revised to 62 GB—still a near-doubling of current usage levels.

This surge in data demand reinforces the critical need for high-capacity, low-latency 5G infrastructure capable of supporting data-intensive applications such as video streaming, cloud gaming, IoT connectivity, and enterprise solutions.

Mid-Band Spectrum and 5G FWA Fuel Expansion

One of the primary enablers of India’s 5G expansion has been the availability of mid-band spectrum, which offers an optimal balance between coverage and capacity. Telecom operators are leveraging this spectrum to extend reliable and high-speed 5G coverage across both urban and rural landscapes.

Equally transformative is the rapid deployment of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)—particularly in underserved rural and semi-urban areas. The report highlights how the growing demand for broadband, especially beyond metro centers, is driving operators to accelerate their FWA initiatives, delivering fiber-like speeds without laying physical cables.

A New Era for Indian Connectivity

The findings in Ericsson’s report paint a picture of a country racing toward a fully connected digital future. As India positions itself as a global technology leader, the expansion of 5G is not only redefining how consumers interact with mobile services but also laying the groundwork for smart infrastructure, AI-driven applications, and next-gen industrial solutions.

With telecom operators and policymakers aligned on the digital roadmap, India’s aggressive 5G rollout could serve as a model for other emerging economies, balancing technological ambition with inclusive access.
