FSSAI Reassures Consumers, Dismisses Claims Linking Eggs to Cancer Risk

By Shilpa Reddy , 22 December 2025

India’s food safety regulator has moved to dispel public चिंता by categorically rejecting claims that egg consumption increases the risk of cancer. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said recent assertions circulating in the public domain lack scientific credibility and are not supported by established nutritional research. Emphasizing eggs as a widely consumed and affordable source of high-quality protein, the regulator cautioned against misinformation that could influence dietary habits without evidence. The clarification aims to restore consumer confidence and reinforce the role of science-based regulation in safeguarding public health amid the rapid spread of unverified health claims.

Regulator Pushes Back Against Misinformation

FSSAI issued a formal clarification after reports and social media posts suggested a link between egg consumption and cancer risk. The authority stated that such claims are misleading and contradict decades of peer-reviewed research and global dietary guidelines.

According to the regulator, no credible scientific study has established a direct causal relationship between eggs and cancer. Officials stressed that selective interpretation of isolated studies often leads to confusion and unwarranted fear among consumers.

Eggs and Nutritional Science

Eggs are recognized globally as a nutrient-dense food, providing high-quality protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Health authorities, including international nutrition bodies, have consistently endorsed moderate egg consumption as part of a balanced diet.

FSSAI reiterated that dietary recommendations must be grounded in comprehensive scientific evidence rather than anecdotal findings. The authority added that eggs play a particularly important role in addressing protein deficiency in developing economies, where affordable nutrition remains a public health priority.

Importance of Evidence-Based Health Communication

Public health experts note that unfounded health claims can have far-reaching consequences, including distorted consumer behavior and unnecessary dietary restrictions. In this case, misleading narratives risk undermining a key protein source for large segments of the population.

FSSAI emphasized the need for responsible communication, urging individuals and organizations to verify claims through reliable scientific channels before sharing them publicly. The regulator also highlighted its ongoing role in monitoring food-related information and intervening when misinformation poses a risk to public understanding.

Consumer Confidence and Regulatory Oversight

The clarification from FSSAI is part of a broader effort to strengthen trust in India’s food safety framework. By promptly addressing misinformation, the regulator seeks to reassure consumers that food safety policies are driven by rigorous scientific evaluation.

Analysts say such interventions are increasingly important in an era where health-related content spreads rapidly online, often without adequate scrutiny.

Looking Ahead

FSSAI’s dismissal of cancer risk claims linked to eggs serves as a reminder of the importance of science-led policy and informed public discourse. As dietary trends and health narratives continue to evolve, the regulator’s stance reinforces the message that nutrition decisions should rest on credible evidence, not conjecture. For consumers, the reassurance offers clarity—and confidence—in continuing to include eggs as part of a balanced and nutritious diet.
