In a significant boost to India's growing digital economy, Cognizant Technology Solutions is set to invest over ₹1,500 crore in a new technology campus at Kapuluppada IT Hills in Visakhapatnam. The initiative, announced by Andhra Pradesh Information Technology Minister Nara Lokesh, is expected to generate approximately 8,000 jobs over three phases. The American IT giant will begin operations from a temporary facility in early 2026, ahead of the completion of Phase I of its permanent campus by early 2029. Positioned as a cornerstone for regional transformation, this investment aims to cement Andhra Pradesh's status as a key global tech hub and promote inclusive digital skilling across India's tier-2 cities.

A Vision for Inclusive Tech Growth
The announcement underscores Andhra Pradesh’s strategic push to diversify the IT ecosystem beyond traditional metros. “We welcome Cognizant to Vizag. This investment will accelerate regional growth and future-ready workforce development,” stated Minister Lokesh, adding that the project aligns with the state’s ambition to transform tier-2 cities into centres of technological innovation and employment.

Kapuluppada IT Hills, the site chosen for the campus, spans 22 acres and has been designated for tech development as part of the state's broader infrastructure agenda. The government’s prompt project clearance signals a policy environment aimed at attracting global tech players and fostering a skilled talent pipeline outside the urban core.

Cognizant’s Commitment to India and Strategic Expansion
For Cognizant, the Visakhapatnam project is part of a broader strategy to decentralize its operations and tap into emerging talent markets. “We are proud to expand in the port city and thank the government for its progressive support,” said S Ravi Kumar, CEO of Cognizant. He emphasized the region’s deep talent pool, robust infrastructure, and conducive policy framework as key enablers for the investment.

This campus will play a vital role in bolstering Cognizant’s global transformation delivery capabilities, helping the company stay agile in an increasingly digital-first world. Kumar reaffirmed the firm's focus on building an “inclusive, innovation-driven digital workforce” that will help meet the complex demands of global clients.

Building from the Ground Up: Timeline and Operations
The first phase of Cognizant’s permanent campus is expected to go live by early 2029. Until then, operations will commence in 2026 from a temporary facility designed to accommodate 800 employees. The long-term plan involves phased scaling to a full capacity of 8,000 professionals, spanning roles in software development, digital services, and ITES.

This move also positions Vizag as a new node in Cognizant’s expansive Indian network. The company, which has over 70% of its 336,300 global workforce based in India, continues to view the country as a critical pillar of its operations. From Chennai to Hyderabad to Pune, India has been central to Cognizant’s delivery model, and Visakhapatnam now joins that strategic map.

Regional Development and Digital Skilling
Cognizant’s entry into Andhra Pradesh is expected to yield substantial secondary benefits. The influx of employment and training opportunities is set to stimulate the local economy, enhance real estate development, and encourage other firms to explore investment in the region. The emphasis on digital skilling also resonates with India’s national vision for a future-ready workforce, aligned with programs such as Skill India and Digital India.

Beyond job creation, the campus will serve as a catalyst for broader economic activity—spanning housing, transportation, and ancillary services—thereby integrating Vizag more deeply into India’s digital growth narrative.

Conclusion: A New Era for Andhra Pradesh’s Tech Landscape
Cognizant’s ₹1,500 crore commitment to Visakhapatnam marks a defining moment for Andhra Pradesh’s aspirations as a technology powerhouse. The collaboration between a global IT leader and a forward-looking state government illustrates a shared vision of inclusive, regionally balanced growth. With operations set to commence in just over a year and a long-term vision that aligns with India’s digital ambitions, this partnership has the potential to redefine Vizag’s economic future and establish it as a crucial node in the global technology value chain.
